Short Story line / Plot of Ron’s Gone Wrong
The technology company Bubble develops an algorithm to assist kids in making friends and forming relationships through the use of B-bots, or robots. B-bots, which resemble a cross between a smartphone and a best friend, appears to be taking over the world. Everyone soon appears to have a B-bot, with the exception of Barney, a middle-school student who lives on the outskirts of town with his father and grandmother in a modest home. Due to his family’s extreme poverty, Barney is not popular and makes an effort to blend in at school.
Barney’s father and grandmother decide to buy him a B-bot after he starts to get teased by classmates for not having one. Although they are forbidden entry, they find a man in a loading bay who sells them a damaged B-bot. Ron, the B-bot, and Barney’s relationship have a rocky beginning. In front of a popular girl who used to be Barney’s friend, Ron humiliates Barney. However, after Ron puts the bullies in their place, Barney bonds closely with him. When a bully learns why Ron behaves in such an odd way, he disables the security on his own B-bot, starting a chain of events that causes chaos throughout the entire school.
